Fat is not a feeling. Changing the language we use to describe our emotions is an essential step toward improving our beliefs and creating body confidence. Unfortunately, due to the societal stereotypes with help from the diet and fitness industries, the word “fat” has become associated with lazy, unhealthy, unsuccessful, shame and fear. Conversely, success, happiness, confidence, etc…have become associated with the word “thin.” By challenging this stereotype and neutralizing these words, we reduce their negative impact.
Stop using the word “fat” to describe your feelings and start articulating your real feelings. For example, instead of saying, “I feel so fat,” you might say something like, “I feel so overwhelmed”. By acknowledging your real feelings, you’re in a better place to give yourself some compassion and realize that restricting calories, eating or exercising excessively, and being “thin” are not the answers.
